Madison Residents Respond to Pandemic with Overwhelming Support

Within days of Governor Ned Lamont issuing the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order on March 23, The Madison Foundation (TMF) launched a comprehensive fundraising campaign to help residents impacted by the Coronavirus crisis. The Foundation’s largest component fund, Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N) immediately set up the COVID-19 Fund to assist individuals who were furloughed or laid off as a result of the economic shutdown.

“Donations to the COVID-19 Fund have exceeded $100,000. This is great news for people who will be needing help in the months ahead,” said Laurie Heflin, founding director of N2N. The Fund has already committed $30,000 to Madison Youth and Family Services (MYFS) to provide immediate funding for those impacted by the pandemic.

Heflin anticipates the need for financial assistance will grow when unemployment benefits run out and homeowner relief packages expire. “The COVID-19 Fund will be the lifeline for those whose fragile personal finances collapsed when the economy shut down.”

“The overwhelming support from the community is humbling,” said Renee Pallenberg, TMF board president. The Guilford Savings Bank provided the first significant donation to the COVID-19 Fund. “From there it has grown steadily with donations large and small,” according to Pallenberg.

If you are a Madison resident in need of immediate financial assistance, visit the Madison Youth and Family Services website at https://www.madisonct.org/1032/COVID-19-Resources to complete a brief funding application. This free and confidential service was designed to mitigate the impact of the Coronavirus crisis on community members. Seniors in need should contact Senior Services for support.

“Assistance can be renewed every thirty days,” says Heflin.” Direct payments are available to provide support for those with unexpected job losses, need for childcare or energy assistance.” Heflin is proud to be a part of a community that cares for its neighbors. “Madison is a beautiful town with caring people who want to help one another.”

Residents needing financial support can call MYFS at (203) 245-5645. Senior Services are available at (203) 245-5627.
